Concerned Law Professors came together to resist rising attacks on free speech, academic freedom and university independence. We are particularly concerned about the undue influence of private donors and the House GOP’s weaponization of antisemitism to smear academics and undermine public trust in higher education. The House GOP’s anti-democratic assault on free speech and academic freedom bolsters a much broader rightwing campaign to erode pillars of our multiracial democracy. As documented by organizations including the Association of American University Professors, UCLA’s CRT Forward Tracking Project, and PEN America, this campaign includes escalating state-based efforts to censor what teachers teach, to erode faculty protections, and to undermine institutional independence.
This new breed of legislation is designed to kick the legs out from underneath university governance and autonomy, so that the next time the state moves to censor faculty, no one is in position to push back.
